The first ever Virtual event was held over the weekend with 41 athletes taking part. The previously planned Kirkwall 10km should have been taking place on Sunday 26th April, but in light of current circumstance the event obviously had to be cancelled. In its place a Virtual 10km was organised by OAC coach Ian Sutcliffe.
‘Scottish Athletics held a Virtual Relay Race a few weeks ago and this is what gave me the idea to try to hold a Virtual 10km here. Scottish Athletics were very clear about following Government guidelines for the race and we applied these to our Virtual 10Km. I was really pleased we had so many entries and there were some really interesting stories in amongst the people who took part.’
The club was very clear that runners were allowed one attempt at the race and routes with a significant negative elevation would not be counted. They were also asked to avoid popular walking routes and parks. Government guidelines for the coronavirus crisis had to be obeyed. Every runner was to complete the race alone, not driving to another location, and observing social distance guidelines by staying 2m away from others.
Winner for the Men’s section was Craig Moar in a time of 36.24, and Chelsea Cook was the fastest woman in a time of 41.33. Some runners chose slightly alternative routes to the norm, with Johnny Edwards completing 621 laps of his kitchen to complete the distance in a time of 1.09.56. Ruth Spence competed in two races over the weekend having entered another virtual 10km race, but still finished in a good time of 48.46. Special mention should also be made to Alfred Shacklady who managed to set a new PB at 86 years young. A full list of results can be found below.
It is hoped that during the lockdown restrictions several other virtual events will be taking place, and Scottish Athletics also have more events organised. Anyone wishing to take part in any of the events should keep an eye on the website and club Facebook page for all the details
