National Age Group Championships U13, U15, U20

On Friday 28th February, a small group from Orkney Athletics Club travelled to the Emirates Stadium in Glasgow to compete at the Scottish Athletics National Age Group Championships U13, U15, U20. The group consisted of Tegan Spence U20, Abi Coltherd U13, Emily McArthur U13 and Molly Tulloch U13.

The competition for the U13 sprinters started off with the 60m. With a heat, semi-final and a final to contend with, Abi Coltherd reached the final finishing in 5th place. Her best time from the rounds was 8.58 seconds. Molly Tulloch made it to the semi final and just missed out on a final place with a time of 8.84 seconds.

The U13 sprinters were then straight back into the warm up zone to get ready for the 200m. Again, this event had 3 rounds, a heat, semi-final and final. Abi Coltherd progressed through the rounds with impressive performances making the final and finishing in fourth place just missing out on a Bronze medal. Her best time from the rounds was 28.33 seconds. Molly Tulloch progressed to the semi finals and was drawn against Abi. She was very unlucky not to make the final with a time of 28.84 seconds. Her fully committed sprint from lane 1, which is an extremely tight lane, saw her just miss out but, it was a great sight to see the red vests of Orkney crossing the line in 1st and 2nd position in that semi final.

Tegan Spence was next to run in the U20 400m. As expected she was in a fully loaded heat but she had a very strong and impressive run to make the final in a time of 59.80 seconds which was a big indoor PB for her.

Emily McArthur had a long wait in the stadium waiting for her U13 800m race but the wait was worth it. In a high class field Emily found herself at the back of the pack due to a tactical sprint start and a very fast first lap. This caught Emily off guard but she fought hard and made moves to progress up the field. Coming into the last lap she was in third position. With her strength and speed she kicked hard and with 150m to go she had the girl in 1st place in her sights. It was a very close finish with Emily finishing in 2nd place and gaining a fantastic Silver medal. Emily achieved a time of 2:30.74 minutes, just behind the winner on 2:30.47minutes. A very close and exciting race for the spectators.

This was the first outing for the U13 girls at an Indoor Competition. Going through the rounds and having to report to call rooms etc has been a valuable experience for them all. They all thoroughly enjoyed it and achieved incredible times.
