Fantastic end to a Fantastic Season for Orkney Athletic Club

27 athletes travelled to Inverness this weekend to compete in the Hippo grand final – the last competition for Orkney Athletic Club this season.

Perfect calm and warm weather conditions along with seeded athletic disciplines produced a fantastic total of 27 personal best performances by the Orkney squad!

Stand out individual personal best performances on the day were by
Ronan Donaldson and Joe Gregg taking 5 seconds each of their 400m times; Gauis Bews’ tremendous long jump of 5.95m and running a controlled but fast 400m time; Evie Peace continuing to improve her 80m hurdles time; James Nicolson and Jodie Drever’s improved speed in their 200m; Sarah MacPhail taking 2 seconds of 300m time and achieving 1.50m at High jump; Erin Montgomery’s strong shot putt of 7.04m; Amy Davis taking 8 seconds off her 800m time and clearing 1.30m in High Jump and Sasha Miller proudly competing in 3 throwing events on her first trip away with Orkney Athletic Club.

At the awards evening following this final competition Grace Bowen became the Hippo Olympian under 11 champion and the under 16 age group squad of Orkney athletes won their age group trophy out of 11 clubs competing in the Highland and Island region. Orkney Athletic club were placed in 2nd place for all other trophies and OAC coaches are extremely proud of all athletes who have competed home and away this season. Best match performance t shirts in any one of the three HIPPO competitions were presented to Amy Davis, Kirsten Flett, Chris Mackay, Liam Drury, Thora Cant and Calvin Cooper. Grade three UKA performance level achieved at a HIPPO competition this year was attained by Kayla Smith (U14 75m hurdles), Chris MacKay (U14 high jump) and Sarah MacPhail (U16 High Jump) and also a Scottish record Javelin performance by Thora Cant was enthusiastically celebrated. At the awards ceremony Orkney Athletic Club were given the recognition of having an exciting developing athletic squad now covering many athletic disciplines and forecasting a very healthy future for the club.
