➡️Report On The Pickaquoy Centre Open Graded Competition⬅️
It was a very blustery day for the last ever Athletics event on the original Picky track on Sunday at The Pickaquoy Centre Open Graded. Ninety-six athletes entered, making it Orkney Athletic and Running Club’s biggest event for a number of years. Six athletes achieved Island Games standards – Max Linklater and Connor Harcus in high jump, Emily McArthur in 400m, Ewan Foubister in 5000m and Steven MacPhail and Calum Elder in shot put. This is a great start for these athletes’ bid to gain a place in the Athletics Team for Orkney 2025.
The morning started off on the field, with the javelin throwers and high jumpers battling against the wind. There was a close contest amongst the U20 Javelin athletes, with William Macdonald coming out on top, followed by Jamie Sutherland and Max Linklater. Three athletes did really well to improve on their PBs, with U13 Woody Monkman securing a big 2.28m PB of 23.23m, a 0.43m PB of 21.90m for U17 Rafi Linklater, and a huge 3.32 PB of 20.41m for U15 Madison Russell.
There was another exciting U20 clash in high jump, with Max Linklater coming out on top of Connor Harcus on countback, with both jumping 1.75m, a PB for Connor. U17 Aiden Heddle jumped a 5cm PB of 1.55m; there was a 2cm PB for U15 Jorgi Craigie of 1.34m; and U13 Kathryn Moar jumped a 7cm PB of 1.30m.
In long jump, it was the U13s impressing, with Tyler Budge getting a 13cm PB of 3.92m, and Louise Gilmour having a great first competition with a super jump of 3.71m.
The shot put circle saw a great range of ages of athletes enter it, some for the first time in competition, and some coming back after a few decades’ rest! There were big smiles on the faces of U17 athletes Lizzie Harcus, Rafi Linklater and Ethan Moar. Lizzie threw a 72cm PB of 8.53m, Rafi’s was a 74cm PB of 7.52m, and Ethan threw 5.49m to give him a 68cm PB. Steven MacPhail and Calum Elder were well over the 11.50m Island Games standard, with throws of 12.01m and 11.87m respectively.
Conditions were challenging for the track athletes, with really strong winds on the homestraight. Obviously, that meant for a good backwind on the backstraight though! U20 Connor Harcus, U17 Abi Coltherd and U15 Nuala Webb dominated in the sprints, with Connor taking over half a second off his 200m PB, in a time of 24.56. A big High 5 goes to U15 Tamsin Blowfield for getting a PB in a -6m/s headwind in the 100m! U15 Orrin Dick took 1.64s off his 200m PB in a time of 27.60, and U17 Emily McArthur took 0.17s off hers, in a time of 27.91. It was great to see twelve U11 athletes competing over 75m, with Alfie Cromarty coming out on top for the boys and Georgie McLennan for the girls. There was a really exciting battle for the line in the 400m between Ryan Coltherd and Brogan Russell, with just 0.23 seconds separating the two U20 athletes. Ryan just dipped over the line ahead of Brogan. U17 Emily McArthur was well inside the Island Games standard time for 400m of 63.00, with a time of 61.30.
There was another exciting finish between U13s Dara Glackin and Taylor Mackay in the 800m, with Dara coming in 0.06s ahead of Taylor and getting a PB of 2:57.34. Eli Thornton was the fastest U13 though, coming in at 2:46.00. U13 Imogen Huggard took 2.84s of her 800m time, with a PB of 3:22.85.
V40 athlete, Joel Chaney stole the show in the 1500m, nipping around the track in 5:01.37. U17 Elsie Hutchison made a very worthwhile trip in from Westray to take 8.9s off her 1500m PB, finishing in 5:46.79. Joel then went on to run the 5000m as well! V55 Maggie Collingborn beat that though, running the 800m, 1500m and 5000m – amazing! It was fantastic to have so many senior athletes taking part in a range of events. No less than fifteen runners lined up for the 5000m, and U20 Ewan Foubister was the fastest finisher in his first race at this distance. He set a PB of 16:54.38. We missed seeing Craig Moar on the track for this event, as he had to sacrifice the opportunity because he was in Aberdeen for the second part of his Coach in Running Fitness course. We are very grateful to Craig for giving up his time to do this, and we look forward to seeing a head-to-head between him and Ewan soon!
Congratulations to all athletes for a great competition! Many athletes took part in events for the first time or moved up into new weight categories for throws, so they have set PBs as well. If I have missed any PBs in this report, I apologise for that. Please make sure you fill them in accurately on the entry form! We were absolutely delighted to have almost a hundred athletes competing, each gThe Pickaquoy Centrege thanks go to The Pickaquoy Centre for sponsoring the event and for all of the help from the staff; all of the organisers and officials who did a brilliant job of making this opportunity possible for our athletes; the coaches who helped prepare the athletes and supported them through the competition; Fionn for the great photos; everyone who helped on the refreshments table, brought food and donated almost £300; and to everyone who came along to support the athletes on the day. A special mention goes to our administration team who have worked hard to get to grips with the new Open Track entries and results system. It takes a lot of dedication from our volunteers to keep our Club moving forward in such a positive direction – thank you all.
😁See you all in July for our next Open Graded Home Competition….on our brand spanking new track!😁
