⭐️TRIPLE TOP FOR TYLER AND NEW RECORD FOR EMILY⭐️
Our Club trip to the North District Championships was a great success. The sunshine certainly lifted everyone and helped secure some great performances. We had 32 athletes competing, Lyle and Soo supporting them alongside three parent helpers, and a team of seven OARC officials who worked as a vital part of the event team. Our older athletes who work with the primary section as coaching assistants were fantastic at supporting their younger team mates both days.
Between them, the athletes set 26 new PBs, and won 14 medals in the U13 to U17 age groups, and 22 top three placings in the U20 and Senior age groups. The highlights of the weekend came from Tyler Budge, with Golds in the U13 100m, 200m and long jump, also setting new PBs in the latter two events, and Emily McArthur who beat her own ✨Orkney U20 400m Record✨, with a time of 57.99. Very well done, both of you!👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
In the U13 age group, all eight of them set new PBs, including Alesha, who PBed in all three of her events (100m, 200m, shot put)! For Alesha, Alfie C, Anya (PB 100m), Archie (PB shot put) and Georgie (PB 100m), this was their first competition outside Orkney and they all coped very well with it and rose to the occasion. Imogen made it into the top eight in her long jump, which saw her secure her new PB of 3.70m. Sophie was laser-focused in her shot put and that paid off with a 31cm PB of 5.70m. Alfie C came home with a medal from his first away competition, taking bronze in the long jump, with a 44cm improvement of 3.82m. He also got into the final of the 100m where he finished fifth. Tyler dominated this age group with his three wins across long jump (4.59m), 100m (14.84) and 200m (29.37).
The athletes in the U15 age group also all had PBs. The weather was finally kind to Nuala, who has had some great runs in the 200m but the wind readings have been above the legal limit of 2mps. At the time of her race on Friday evening, the dial was reading -0.2mps and she blasted out a PB of 28.33 to take the gold medal. This was followed by a silver in the 100m. It was brilliant to see three Orkney girls in both of the sprint finals, with Kathryn and Louise both qualifying as well. Kathryn took bronze in both and went on to take silver in the high jump. Louise finished just outside the medals in 4th in the 200m and the same in the long jump, but she secured great PBs in both. Eli had a fantastic run in the 800m. He was well ahead of the rest of the boys, so it was remarkable that he managed to take over seven seconds off his PB running out front on his own. He took the gold in a time of 2:26.93 and went on to qualify for the 200m final as well. Alfie G was still buzzing from the PB of 1.33m he set in high jump at the last home competition, and the confidence this gave him saw him soar over 1.40m to take silver in Inverness on his first trip with the Club. Annie got PBs in her 200m (33.08) and long jump (3.29m).
With exams still in full swing, we only had four U17 athletes competing. Gerard has been working on the transition from scissor technique to the flop in high jump, and he used a mixture of the two in Inverness. His jump of 1.50m saw him take a silver medal home from his first competition outside Orkney. He had a wobble in the blocks of his 100m and this led to an arguably harsh straight red card from the start team. A very hard lesson learned. We look forward to seeing him get a good race in the 100m at home next weekend. Max T was also on his first Club trip but second time on the track in Inverness. Lining up against Kian from Shetland was always going to lead to a rapid race, and neither the 100m or 200m disappointed! Into a strong head wind for both sprints, -4.1mps in the 100m, Max took silver in both with great times of 12.02 (PB) and 24.43. Rafi got over 24m for the first time this year to take gold in the javelin, and she finished just outside the medals in the shot put, with a throw of 8.37m. Lizzie was also competing in the shot put, where her best throw was 8.23m, and she landed a 7cm PB in long jump with a leap of 4.09m.
Fourteen of our Junior Inter County and Island Games athletes from the U20 and Senior age groups competed. Emily’s 400m PB and Record were also backed up by a great run in the 800m. She tucked in behind Abbie from Stornoway throughout the race and gave it all she had in the closing 100m, but it was to be 2nd on the day, with a super time of 2:17.31. Ava stayed in contact with them both as well and crossed the line in 3rd in 2:22.40, with Elsie following in 4th in 2:45.56. Ava and Elsie went again in the 1500m. This time it was Ava’s turn to track Abbie, and she sat on her shoulder right up until the last 200m when Abbie stretched away. Ava crossed the line in 2nd in 4:54.18, another strong 1500m performance, and Elsie finished in 5:20.07. Three of our men lined up for the 800m, Ewan and Ryan for the Seniors and Aiden in U20. Ryan managed to keep contact with Ewan pretty well, and this led to a PB of 2:07.79 for him, with Ewan crossing the line first in 2:03.04. The 800m athletes had had a long wait for the start of their races, and this disrupted Aiden’s high jump. He was going back and forth to jump whilst waiting for his race and had cleared 1.55m, but, frustratingly, the bar had moved well above that by the time he had run, so that is where his competition finished. Max L and Jenna were jumping throughout this time, and Jenna improved on the PB she set at the last home competition by flying over 1.55m beautifully. Max cleared 1.75m. Max had also joined Jamie and Lucy in the javelin the previous evening. Lucy had a frustrating event, with 27.81m her best of the day, whilst Jamie topped the group with 42.95m, with Max behind him with 36.24m. Millie was also throwing, but in the shot put circle, where she managed a top throw of 8.07m. Jenna, Abi and Millie all competed in the 100m, with Abi coming out with the fastest time of 13.44. Abi and Millie went again in the 200m, with Effie joining them, and Abi came out on top again with a PB of 26.75. Effie and Ryan were in the same race as Emily in the 400m and both ran good times, just outside their PBs. Craig ran his first 3000m track race and was pleased to dip under the ten minute mark with a time of 9:56.91.
Congratulations to everyone on their achievements and for being a fabulous bunch to take away, including all of our wonderful volunteers for giving their time and energy to this event and to those who captured the medal presentations on camera. 🥇🥈🥉 NORTH DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIPS - MEDAL ROUND-UP DAY ONE🥇🥈🥉
Following a flat-calm crossing with NorthLink Ferries this morning, we headed down to Inverness for the North District Championships. Queen's Park was bathed in sunshine and we were treated to a wonderful evening’s athletics.
There was really exciting competition in some of the events, whilst many of the older age-group events lacked numbers, but the athletes embraced the opportunity to compete in favourable conditions.
As the results haven’t been posted yet, a full report on PBs will have to wait, but here’s a celebration of the placings. Medals were awarded to the U13/15/17 athletes only. A sad day for the oldies!😂
