More Success for Orkney Athletic Club

Thirteen athletes from Orkney were selected for Team Hippo in the first Scottish Young athletes League in Dundee on Easter Sunday. Team Hippo consists of the top two athletes in each event for the Highlands and Islands area so it is an honour to be selected to compete regionally. Perfect sunny and calm conditions in Caird Park, Dundee led to 13 personal best performances from Orkney athletes.

In the under 13 age group the most notable performance was by Taylah Spence in the High Jump clearing 1.44m (2cm below her own height!) ranking her top in Scotland and 2nd in UK. She also set a blistering winning pace in both the 75m(10.8s) and 150m(21.3s).Sam Croy stormed home 1st in his 100m(14.2s) and came 2nd in his 200m(30.0s). His Shot Putt produced a new PB of 6.68m. A delighted Erina Brown led from the front and convincingly won her 800m in a great PB of 2m39.2s followed by a 1st place in the ‘B’long jump (3.68m). All ran in Team hippo 4x100m relays.

In the under 15 age group 800m runners Sarah MacPhail and Andrew Davis took a whopping 7s and 4s off last season’s PBs, taking them down to 2.34s(3rd) and 2.32s(4th) respectively. A great result for Sarah after a difficult High jump competition. Sarah joined Dana Sutherland in the 200m both achieving 30s. Dana and Alex Stevenson ran the 100m coming 3rd (14.6s) and 4th (13.1s) respectively and ran the 4x100m relays. Both also got well deserved PBs in their Long Jump (Dana) 4.57m(2nd) and (Alex) 4.51m(4th). The javelin competition gave Thora Cant the opportunity to continue to improve her impressive PB to 29.13m(1st) and remain top in Scotland and Alex gave a strong 29.44m throw to come 3rd.

In the under 17 age group Evie Peace surprised herself gaining PBs in the Long Jump 4.55m(3rd) and in her first competitive 300m race 46.1s(4th). Polly Thomson joined Evie in the 100m both coming 4th in 14.1s and 13.4s respectively and ran together in the 4x100m relay team. Polly also competed in the’B’ Long Jump 4.21m(3rd) and produced a brave Shot Putt PB of 5.22m. Rhian Mackay ran hard in her 800m coming 2nd in 2.38s and has been inspired to also train more in Discus as she threw a creditable 15.33m. The Sanday boys Liam Drury and Steven Skea competed well in their first Dundee competition. Liam came 4th in his 100m (12.3s), Steven 5th (13.7s) and ran together in the 4x100m relay. Liams 400m gave him a new PB (60.5s) and Steven soared in his best event, High Jump, to a creditable 1.60m in a high class field of high jumpers.

Overall Team Hippo came 2nd in this League, a fantastic result when Orkney represented one third of the competing team! It is a great start to a very busy early season. Full results are available HERE.
