Kirkwall Virtual Half Marathon Results

This weekend saw the running of the virtual Kirkwall half marathon. Numbers were down on previous virtual races with a number of runners saying how difficult they found it to keep pushing when running for a longer distance with no opponents.

The race was won by Craig Moar of OAC who set a new PB of 1:21:17, with Gary Ward coming in second in a time of 1:27:27 . This was Gary’s first attempt at a half marathon, and it was certainly a good time. Rounding out the top three was Adam Hough from Sanday in a time of 1:30.

However the impressive story of this race came from the women’s event. The women’s race was won by Michelle Green in 1:44:04., and coming in second, only 34 seconds behind, was debut runner  Julie Garriock. Julie only took up running last November. She has always run on her own and never entered a race of any description before or even taken part in a Parkrun. Julie said that her only preparation had been a 16 week marathon training programme  that she found online. Her commitment is to be commended and she was quite rightly thrilled with her result.

It was great to once again be joined by a number of the North Highland Harriers in the race, and it is hoped that some Orkney runners will take part in their Caithness virtual half marathon next month. More details will be made available on the Orkney Athletic Club Facebook page when they become available.
