Inter Regional Selection for Orkney Athletic Club Athletes

On Saturday over 40 U16 and U18 athletes competed for Highlands and Islands at the Inter Regional Championships, Wishaw competing against all the top 2 athletes in each region of Scotland. In a busy programme there was a fantastic overall H & I team result , finishing 4th in the competition. Selection for this competition was done centrally and 5 athletes from Orkney Athletic Club represented the Highlands and Islands team – U18 Morna Brown, U16 Thora Cant, Alex Stevenson, Sarah MacPhail and Dana Sutherland. Selection indicated they were one of the top 2 athletes in their athletic discipline in the Highland and Island Region.

Thora Cant continued her successful season by easily winning the U16 javelin throwing a respectable 29.66m and threw 15.85m in Discus; Sarah MacPhail jumping a consistent 1.45m, narrowly missing pb height of 1m50, came 4th in High Jump; Alex Stevenson had a terrific pb javelin throw of 36.74m placing him an excellent 4th place and had a high jump of 1.45m; Dana Sutherland had a busy day competing in 3 events with her strongest performance coming 5th in Long Jump 4.48m, Discus 11.73m and Shot Putt 6.37m .

Morna Brown had a tough day as her two events were timetabled very close together impacting on her high jump 1.40m but she had a great 300m hurdles time of 51.7s placing her a very creditable 6th. The 300H is a new event for Morna but she is showing natural talent for hurdling. A long early morning journey and some ferocious officiating decisions on the competition day somewhat impacted on individual performances but the standard of all selected OAC athletes should be very much congratulated with their continued regional selection, improving performances from committed training schedules and their on-going dedication to Orkney Athletic Club.

Due to the severe adverse weather conditions at the weekend Orkney Athletic Club Championships sponsored by AJB Scholes was postponed and have been rescheduled to Sunday 11th September with events to suit all including a track 5K. It is the final local competition of the year with medals to be won and a fun day out for all participating athletes and spectators.
