Fabulous Finish at Flotta

This years Flotta 10k took place last week (15th May) and there was an excellent entry of 33 runners despite the blustery weather.

As the race set off they were met by a small shower of rain but it was the strong wind that was to prove the problem.

There was a group of five runners that set off at a good pace and they stayed together until the last half mile. Graham Harcus, Mike Cumming, Paul Kerr, David Grant and Mark Dowell had a great battle throughout with various tactics being employed to try and break the other runners. David tried on a couple of occasions to surge away but each time he was reeled back in by the others.

With half a mile to go, Graham started to feel the pace on the last hill and then David and Paul pushed on again and broke clear. With 150 m to go it was neck and neck and Paul just had that extra to burst clear of David to win. Mike and Mark had a similiar battle with Mike getting third and the first veteran, Mark fourth and Graham fifth. A fantastic finish and, despite the weather, Paul, David and Mark all broke the previous senior record, with only 30 seconds separating first and fifth.

In the women’s race Lorna Leslie pulled out a clear lead and was strong right through to the finish. Behind her, Katrina and Anne Seatter were pushing each other on and came in in the same time for second and third place with Katrina as the first senior female. Kirsten Liebke was just behind in fourth, an excellent effort in her first Flotta 10k.

There were many good, solid performances throughout the field and some close battles. Sandra Robertson had a great run and was the first Flotta resident, just being pipped by Ruth Spence by 9 seconds, Despite a calf problem Andy Walker still managed 61.12 with Claire Stevenson one second in front.

The juniors set off at the same time as the senior race but started at the halfway point. Andrew Davis had a fine race finishing in 30.46, one minute clear of Adam Shaw and in the Junior girls there was a great performance from Amy Davis finishing in 31 minutes 53 seconds.

The runners and walkers and their supporters were then royally treated by the Flotta community with food, raffles, sale tables etc. Orkney Athletic Club would like to thank all the people of Flotta for their support of this event and particularly Phyllis for her liaison and work throughout the preceding months. Sodexho again provided an excellent lunch and our thanks go to them for all the help and support they have given.

Finally we would like to thank all the runners and walkers who took part. The next event on the athletic calendar is Hoy followed by the Stromness Shopping Week 10k on Saturday 23rd July.
