Club Updates

I hope you are all well and continuing to cope in these exceptional circumstances. It has been a little while since I was last in touch, but I wanted to touch base with you all and let you know various updates that myself and the Committee have been working on.

COVID-19 Update
As we know we are now in Phase 2 of exiting COVID-19 restrictions, and following the Scottish Government’s announcement last Thursday, Scottish Athletics then released their guidelines on the Friday. The Committee met last night to review the guidelines and talk through the implications for Orkney Athletic Club. The Committee are of the view that due to current restrictions it would still not be feasible to resume club activity at this time. As we know our training facility at The Pickaquoy Centre will not be opening during Phase 2, so the club would have to find alternative public spaces to train in. Groups of 8 people from up to 3 households would be allowed to meet, and this would include the coach, and any parent of athletes under 18. You will see that it very quickly becomes training sessions for only 1 or 2 athletes, and at this time we don’t feel that the club has the resources to facilitate this. We know this may be frustrating for our athletes, and this is a difficult time for everyone, so we ask you to please be patient.

Many of our athletes have continued to train on their own from home, and we know that certainly the athletes hoping to compete at the Island Games in Guernsey next year are in touch with their relevant coaches and continuing to train. If any athletes would like input from their coaches with training plans, then parents can contact the coaches or myself, and we will be happy to help.

Chair
As you may be aware our Chairperson Tamsin Bailey has very sadly stood down from her position, due to personal work commitments. Tamsin has been an integral part of the Club for the last 5 years and her efforts, commitment and enthusiasm have been paramount in driving the Club forward. We would like to thank her for all her hard work and wish her well in the future.

Unfortunately this currently leaves us with no one to fill these very large shoes! The role has changed somewhat since Tamsin took it on, and with a strong Committee and myself in the role of Development Officer, anyone taking on the role would be very well supported. We would love to hear from anyone who thinks that they might like to become more involved in the Club?!

Virtual Events
Some of our athletes have been taking part in various Virtual events organised by Scottish Athletics. This is a great way to keep up some form of competition. Events like the SUPERteams Challenge, Virtual Hill Run, and Virtual Distance have provided the opportunity for athletes to engage in some form of competition and continue to train. Ian Sutcliffe also organised a Virtual 10km, and it is hoped that he will do this again in place of the Stromness 10km that should have been run during Shopping Week. The feedback from athletes taking part in these Virtual events has been really positive and we would love to see more of our athletes become involved. We really don’t know how long it will be before competitions, as we previously knew them, are back in place, so we would encourage athletes to step out of their usual comfort zones and perhaps try something a little different.  Please keep your eye on our Facebook page and Website and we will continue to keep you up to date with any Virtual competitions that may be available.

I am sorry I’m not emailing you to let you all know that training can resume, but I hope you understand the difficulties that we face. The safety and wellbeing of our members is, as always our highest priority, and we have to make our decisions based on the guidelines from Scottish Government and Scottish Athletics. If anyone has any questions or queries then please feel free to contact me, and again I would encourage the athletes to keep training at home, and we cant wait to see them all back when training can resume.

Many thanks for your continued support.
Kim Hamilton
Club Development Officer
