2018 Stromness 10k – Results

A great entry of 54 runners took part in today’s (Saturday, 21 July) Stromness Shopping Week 10k run event, where the field of 32 male and 22 female runners took the opportunity to test themselves along the ‘undulating’ route.

The Stromness route is the third run in the OAC annual series of 10k events and attracted a range of runners – both local and a number from further afield – and it was great to welcome some first timers and those who have recently returned to running among the more familiar (but equally as welcome) runners.

Conditions started dry and mild, however, sustained drizzle (no doubt welcomed by the runners) proved too much for the race numbers and many of them were clasped in hands as entrants crossed the finish line (note to organisers of 2019 event – source waterproof numbers!)

The weather didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of the runners however, and Stromness ICIT student and recent second place winner in the St Magnus 10k – Charles Black managed to improve on his 10k pb and came home in first place with a time of 37.12. Competition amongst the front runners was keen and Charles, along with eventual second place finisher, Thurso runner Kevin Cormack (37.45) were closely pursued by local runners David Grant (38.28), Neil Croy (38.31) and Colin Barnett (39.17).

First female to cross the line was Orkney born Kirsty Watson (nee Balfour) in a time of 43.19 with second place going to Emma Horne (44.13) and Stromness runner Caron Oag coming home third in a very respectable time of 47.31 – in her first ever 10k run event.

The Stromness route is not the easiest of the 10k series (one participant describing the route as not ‘hilly’ but ‘hellish’) – however all runners agreed that the buzz and atmosphere, display of scarecrows, scenery and support received around the route made all of the effort worth it.

Huge thanks are due to run sponsors the Ferry Inn for their continued support and involvement; to the Stromness Royal British Legion and Northlink Ferry Terminal building operators for use of their facilities for runner changing; to the Stromness Shopping Week Committee, the Royal Party and Stromness community for their assistance and support and also to the volunteer marshal team members – Norman Shearer, Liz Foubister, Sheila Adamson, Jacqueline Innes, Anthea Hume and Sylvia Donaldson – with an extra special mention for 12 year old junior OAC member Ewan Foubister who although too young to enter the 10k run, was keen to be involved and did a fantastic job of leading the way for the runners as lead cyclist.

And finally – a big well done to all of the runners who participated today – a full list of the result of your efforts can be found via the link below:-
