1st HIPPO Competition

87 athletes took part in the 1st athletics competition of the season. Although conditions were dry and bright the athletes did have the wind to compete with. A huge amount of thanks must go to Lows Orkney who very kindly agreed to sponsor this event.

In the Javelin, one of the best performances of the event went to Alex Stevenson. Not content with throwing a new pb on his first throw, he then improved this a further 2 times to finish the competition on 31.26m.

The wind was not ideal for the High Jump being outside but this certainly did not deter the jumpers. Personal best performances were achieved by Steven Skea, Sarah Macphail, Chris Mackay and Amy Davis.

In the Shot Put, the athletes from Sanday showed their strength with Lewis Leslie, 11 Year Old and Georgia Leslie, U14 throwing exceptionally well with Amber Lawlor & Andy Leslie U18 completing the North Isles quartet.

Long Jump proved the most popular field event of the day with 46 athletes jumping throughout the day. Grace Bown in her first ever competition in the 10 Year Olds did great clearing the 3m mark with 3.01m. The U14’s girls, Taylah, Kayla and Erina had a real battle in the pit with there only being a total of 4cm separating them. Erina edged out in front with Kayla and Taylah following.

On the track the wind was both a hinderance and a help. Over the shorter sprints the aid of the wind assisted fast times. Unfortunately this didn’t help the middle distance runners, with times approx 4 secs slower than the athletes had hoped for. David Hourie battled his nerves and pulled out a very impressive 800m of 2.20 mins. In the 1500m Magnus Bichan and Jack Duncan, battled hard, both having competed in the 800 earlier, Magnus getting 5.20 mins and Jack Duncan running his first 1500m in 5.30 mins.

One of the great things about these competitions is that there is a mix of ability, age, speed and strength on show. From the well seasoned athletes to the new athletes with nerves and then there are the 9 and 10 year olds, with no expectations but a huge abundance of enthusiasm and determination.

Many Thanks to all the athletes who took part, the sponsors, the officials who volunteered their time, the ladies who helped with the teas and the friends and family who came and gave their support.

Next competition is 22nd May!
